The European Maritime Area: Safety, Security and Environment Challenges
The geography of the European Union (EU) member states’ territories represents a ‘maritime’ continent.
The EU27, 22 of which have maritime borders, is bordered by two oceans, the Atlantic and the Arctic, and it incorporates the maritime basins centred around four seas: the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the North Sea and the Black Sea. Additionally several member states have overseas territories in outermost maritime regions of the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
The EU27 have around 70,000 km of coastline, three times that of the United States and twice that of Russia. The maritime areas under the jurisdiction of member states are larger than the total land area of the EU.
