Recent developments in the political and military contexts are creating an unavoidable drive towards greater ‘jointery’ and interoperability of forces. That translates into greater digitization of the battlespace. Industry, at the heart of this process, has a major role to play in it by providing support to forces and to the national defence procurement agencies.
The Digitization of Armed Forces: more 'Jointery' and Interoperability
The last few years have been particularly marked by a change in conflict typology and by a growing number of operations carried out under the aegis of international bodies.
To meet these new challenges, the armed forces of many countries have launched programmes that hinge upon two approaches:
• Vertical integration, which consists in stepping up the coordination of all of a nation's armed forces (land, naval, air and including space). This integration means an increased and comprehensive use of digital technology.
• Horizontal integration, which consists in making national forces interoperable with their allies, enabling coordination as part of coalition missions. This stage means the setting-up of standards and procedures specific to each alliance, such as the UN and NATO.
